When remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, one of the most important considerations is the finish. A durable finish ensures your cabinetry holds up for years without the hassle of constant upkeep, paint smells, or sanding. If you’re investing in custom cabinetry, here are three key questions to ask your cabinetmaker, designer, or contractor about finishes.
1. What Topcoat Do You Use for a Durable Finish?
Durability depends heavily on the topcoat. Many local finishers rely on lacquer or polyurethane, but these do not match the strength of a catalyzed varnish. Catalyzed varnish requires specialized equipment and fast curing times, which can be costly and labor-intensive — but the results are worth it. This type of finish is resistant to household chemicals (even acetone in nail polish remover) and ensures your cabinets won’t degrade or peel prematurely.
2. How Do You Dry Finishes Between Layers?
Professional factories use large ovens and high-powered lights to bake the finish, accelerating drying and improving adhesion. Some finishes require up to 28 steps, with proper drying between layers ensuring each coat bonds correctly for maximum durability.
3. Are the Cabinets Finished Onsite or in a Shop?
Quality control is another crucial factor. Factory environments use advanced air-filtering systems and negative pressure to minimize dust and particles during finishing. Small shops or onsite applications often lack this level of control, meaning airborne particles can compromise the finish.
